MASTER-CLASS FOR ITALIAN SINGERS WHO SING JAZZ IN ENGLISH

A beautiful song presented by a great jazz singer, may still not come across if the singer does not 1) fully understand the meaning and shades of meaning of the words, or 2) know how to say the words.

1        Class will be presented in Italian.

2        Songs will be sung in English.

3        Preparation: Each student prepares one song for the class. Preferably no two on the same song.

4        If the time allotted does not permit presentation of every student, then: two or more contrasting songs will be chosen for the class, depending on length of time of class…one ‘up’ or medium tempo, and one ballad. We will dedicate at least one half-hour to each song. If time permits, we will take a third song.

5        An accompanist of some sort is desireable. At the least, a pianist or guitarist.

6        After student sings the tune, there will be a discussion period in which the whole class participates. I will ask for their observations before offering my own. Thus they are required to listen keenly, which is the first step toward listening to themselves.

7        Work on the tunes  falls in five categories:

1) The meaning of the lyrics: what do they MEAN technically, and what do they SAY?

2) Where to put emphasis, especially on small words between nouns

3) Where accents fall in each individual word.

4) Where to take (and not to take) a breath.

5) Correct pronunciation

Example: a word such as “sweet” often comes across as ‘swit’; but instead the double ‘e’ needs to become almost a triple e, ‘sweeet’. Honeysuckle Rose, B section , “You’re my sugar, so sweeet when you stir it up!”

1        DURATION OF CLASS: One day to five days, according to the size of group and the wishes of the school director.

2        LENGTH OF CLASS: From a minimum of one hour and a half, to four hours, depending on wishes of school/choral director. Ideal time is three to four hours, with a break.

MASTERCLASS DI  INGLESE PER CANTANTI

-Una bella canzone presentata da un bravo cantante jazz puo` comunque non convincere se il cantante :

1)  NON comprende pienamente il significato e le sfumature di significato delle    parole

2)  NON sa come pronunciare e rendere le parole

Questo corso ha dunque lo scopo di far migliorare notevolmente la performance del cantante che affronta spesso un repertorio in una lingua che non gli è famigliare.

-La lezione sarà in Italiano.

-Le canzoni saranno cantate in Inglese.

-Preparazione: ogni studente dovrà  preparare una canzone per il corso, accordandosi con l’organizzazione onde evitare che venga eseguita due volte la stessa canzone.

-Ogni canzone verra’ presentata, seguita da un periodo di lavoro di mezz’ora. Qualora ce ne fosse la possibilità di presentarne tutte, due o piu` canzoni  verranno scelte per la classe, in base al tempo a disposizione.  Un fast o medium e una ballad.

-Si richiede l’accompagnamento di uno strumentista( pianista o chitarrista)

-Alla fine dell’esecuzione del brano, tutta la classe partecipa alla spiegazione; ogni studente dovrà intervenire prima che l’insegnante faccia le proprie osservzioni; perciò tutti sono tenuti ad ascoltare attentamente, poichè il primo passo  passo per imparare è  ascoltare se stessi .

Il lavoro sul brano verra` affrontato in 5 modi:

1) Il significato del testo: cosa significa letteralmente e che cosa dice.

2) Dove mettere enfasi

3) Dove cadono gli accenti in ogni singola parola

4) Dove prendere (o non prendere) un respiro

5) Pronuncia corretta

-DURATE DELLA MASTERCLASS: da uno a cinque giorni in base alla dimensione del gruppo e alle necessità del direttore della scuola.

-DURATA DELLE LEZIONI: da un minimo di un`ora e mezza ad un massimo di 4 ore, da concordare con il direttore della scuola e l’insegnante di canto. La durata ideale sarebbe dalle 3 alle 4 ore, con una pausa.
