Jazz Club Cuneo – 17.01.2011

Nativa di Boston ma ormai da oltre trent’anni di stanza a New York, Carol Sudhalter è una grande amica dell’Italia, e di Cuneo in particolare, dove torna appena può. E’ così che proprio nel Jazz Club cittadino ha voluto presentare in anteprima assoluta il suo CD freschissimo di stampa (nonché inciso in zona, per l’esattezza a Savigliano, nel luglio scorso) The Great Film Music of the Sixties, firmato in coppia col contrabbassista Carmelo Leotta, che era con lei a Cuneo in seno a un quartetto completato da Fabio Gorlier al pianoforte ed Emilio Berné alla batteria.

Il programma dei due set su cui si è dipanato il concerto ha avuto ovviamente come filo conduttore il materiale del CD, musiche di Legrand, Mancini, Mandel, ecc., per la cui interpretazione la polistrumentista americana si è divisa tra flauto e sax tenore, qua e là producendosi pure alla voce (in un paio di brani, in verità, il gruppo ha anche ospitato quella che Carol ha definito una real singer, Elena Urru). Il contesto abbastanza conviviale, raccolto, ha fatto sì che si privilegiasse una colloquialità piuttosto aperta, diretta, più fluida, aerea, sinuosa negli episodi flautistici, più pensosa e scolpita in quelli al tenore, su cui la Sudhalter sfoggia una sonorità grave e brunita, come opacizzata, nebbiosa e antivirtuosa, che rimanda a un retaggio addirittura premoderno.

Malgrado la conoscenza relativa (Leotta escluso, ovviamente), i partner si sono mossi con disinvoltura, anche se magari evitando – quasi fisiologicamente, d’altra parte – quel tanto di azzardo in più che avrebbe dotato la musica (comunque sempre avvincente) di un peso specifico ancora superiore.

Molto incoraggiante la presenza di pubblico, viatico si spera foriero di invitanti sviluppi per una realtà periferica che – come tante altre del resto, specie di questi tempi – ha quanto mai bisogno di essere corroborata dall’affetto, l’interesse e la passione di un consistente numero di appassionati.

Native Bostonian, residing for the past 30 years in New York, Carol Sudhalter is a great friend of Italy, and in particular of Cuneo, which she visits the minute she gets a chance. And thus it is that in this city’s Jazz Club di Cuneo she has come to present her latest CD, hot off the press (recorded, to boot, in nearby Savigliano, last July), ‘Carmelo and Carol Remember: The Great Film Music of the Sixties’, in collaboration with bassist Carmelo Leotta, here in Cuneo with her, in a quartet rounded out by pianist Fabio Gorlier and drummer Emilio Berné. [Carol is Guest Artist by permission of her contractual label, Alfa Music, Rome].

The program of two sets was clearly based on the CD’s theme: film music of Legrand, Mancini, Mandel, etc. The American multi-instrumentalist played both flute and tenor sax, with a vocal here and there. A guest vocalist, whom Carol called the ‘real singer’, was Elena Urru. The sociable, intimate atmosphere lent itself to a rather open and direct discourse: — more fluid, airy and sinuous on flute, more pensive and sculpted on tenor, where Sudhalter uses a low-pitched and burnished sonority, almost opaque, foggy and down to earth, that brings one back to a pre-modern legacy.

Despite Sudhalter and Leotta not having played wtih the other band members, the group moved with ease through the music, though avoiding that element of risk that would have given this winning performance a slightly higher specific gravity.

The presence of a supportive public was encouraging. One hopes it is the harbinger of positive things to come in one of those many peripheral realities that need the reinforcement of the affection, interest and passion of a consistent number of fans.
