Carol Sudhalter Quartet live at Saint Peter’s Church

A pioneering woman in jazz, Carol Sudhalter has, since the early 1970s, been advancing the cause of women in jazz as a musician (she is among the finest baritone saxophonists of the past several decades but also quite accomplished on tenor sax and flute), big band and combo leader, producer, and educator. She played with the first female Latin band and founded the Astoria Big Band (still active for 33 years). She had a discography of over ten albums to which this new release, recorded at a performance at New York’s famed St. Peters Church is a welcome addition.

She is backed by a tight quartet that includes Patrick Poladian-piano, Kevin Hailey-upright bass, and Mike Campenni-drums and they perform fresh renditions of songs by Jobim, Sonny Rollins, Benny Golson, Tadd Dameron, Bill Evans, Hank Mob- ley, Don Redman and two originals. The opening ren- dition of Tadd Dameron’s “On a Misty Night” quickly establishes the authority and inventiveness she brings to the baritone sax with her robust, brawny attack while the backing trio provides strong support throughout this swinging, modern jazz set.

There is a haunting Benny Golson ballad “Park Avenue Petite” that exhibits her emotional range on the baritone sax while Hailey contributes a melodically grounded solo. There is a lovely flute solo on Bill Ev- ans’ “Time Remembered.” There is a bit of swagger to her playing on Hank Mobley’s “Funk in Deep Freeze” along with some stunning piano which leads into a crisp drum solo.

She sings with a certain charm on “Colin Blues” which is dedicated to one of her students. It should be noted that the vocal, along with spoken announce- ments, is not well miked. Poladian is terrific here as is the leader on flute. There is a strong rendition of Sonny Rollins’ “Valse Hot” along with Poladian‘s swing- ing “Fun in the Alley” with the leader’s playful flute. Bassist Hailey is featured on “Gee Baby Ain’t I Good To You,” set against some excellent piano while Campenni varies his stick work to complement the two. A short melodic reading of Jobim’s “Luiza” closes this strong live recording by a woman who should be much better known. Ron Weinstock

La sassofonista baritono e flautista Carol Sudhalter è conosciuta da tempo fra l’Europa e gli Stati Uniti, anche in Italia, come dimostra questa nuova incisione per la Alfa Music. Si tratta di un live registrato in una chiesa situata sulla Lennox Avenue a new York, insieme ad un trio di connazionali, Patrick Poladian al pinoforte, Kevin Hailey al contrabbasso e Mike Campenni alla batteria. Questa volta rinuncia al sax tenore, suo terzo strumento di solito, in compenso canta su Colin Blues. Si tratta di un mainstream radicato nella tradizione, con dei brani scelti con arguzia, mettendo insieme un concerto che si fa ascoltare attentamente dall’inizio alla fine. Gli ingredienti sono quelli del genere, tanto swing e comunicatività, senza dimenticare un poco di blues e la bossa nova, ormai parte integrante del jazz mainstream internazionale. Si incomincia con un classico del bop, On A Misty Night di Tadd Dameron, segue Park Avenue Petite di Benny Golson, su Time Remembered di Bill Evans la leader passa al flauto. Il pubblico applaude caloroso fra un brano e l’altro, rapito dall’espressività del quartetto, molto intenso e convincente, fino al finale Luiza di Antonio Carlos Jobim. Fun In The Alley è un brano del pianista, con la leader al flauto, anche qui tanto swing negli assoli. Nell’intero concerto rivive la tradizione del jazz mainstream, sempre vivo e coinvolgente per gli ascoltatori.

Long renowned as the pioneer of the Queens, NY jazz scene who founded both the Astoria Jazz Band and Astoria Big Band (going strong now for 33 years), Carol Sudhalter marks two creative firsts on Live at Saint Peter’s Church, a picture perfect date at the Lexington Avenue sanctuary with her remarkable ensemble of Patrick Paladian (piano), Kevin Hailey (upright bass) and Mike Campenni (drums).

It’s her first recording ever featuring her on baritone sax and flute with no tenor supplement. Focusing on the two instruments here allows her to hit emotional highs and lows perfectly.

She plumbs the depth of her horn’s soul while swinging on the opener “On a Misty Night” and “Funk in Deep Freeze,” and uses her dreamy, wistful flute to help us penetrate the haunted heart of Benny Golson’s “Park Avenue Petite” and find lightheartedness amidst the bluesy seduction of “Colin Blues.” This latter track also finds Sudhalter making her vocal debut on record, singing spirited lyrics about one of her students.
